Honey has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, that helps kill acne causing bacteria, as well as help skin heal faster. Oatmeal is also good for the skin due to its grain that is high in protein and carbohydrates. It is also packed full of vitamins,minerals,and lipids.

This soap has a masculine, woodsy smell. Perfect for outdoorsy, active men, and yet has a masculine look to it as well. Some ingredients that stand out are: Charcoal- To become "activated", the charcoal goes through a high temperature steam process. This increases the ability to absorb and filter. It is fantastic for oily skin. If you have dry skin, it may be a little too drying.

A little bit about us
Hey everyone! My name is Emily, founder of Backwoods Basics. I wanted to tell you a little about my "why" and how we got started. I am from a small town in south eastern Indiana. We live on 18 acres tucked back in the cozy woods. My husband and I, have always wanted to "live off the land". That has been my dream and, and now that we have a family of our own, I want to pass that lifestyle onto my children, and theirs. Nowadays, there are so many additives, preservatives, in our food or drinks, its sickening. Recently, my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and I wanted to find a way for her to be more all natural and healthier in her ways ,due to her circumstances. With chemo, came dry skin and sensitivity to a lot of things. With that being said, it made me want to make sure everything was pure and healthy for her to use, as well as my own family. With hours upon hours, I've dipped into the love of homemade, self taught, products. Such as, hand soap to house cleaning products. So, why not make my own soap, candles, and house cleaning products(coming soon) ?! I'll know where my ingredients come from, and know it's safe for my family to use, as well as others. So here we are!

all about that natural
Why should you buy my soap? Well I'll give ya some reasons!
One, there are natural ingredients that you can pronounce.
I make my handmade soap with the melt and pour method, using goat milk soap base. This method involves using the goat milk base that is enriched with oils and sodium hydroxide (lye), and adding in my own fragrances, or additives such as oatmeal, charcoal, honey, etc. With this method, I know where my ingredients come from, and know how they are made. When it comes to quality of my products, I use my own homegrown flowers for my inspiration with my soap and candles. My flowers and herbs consist of lavender, rosemary, mint, and lemongrass which are grown with our own compost that we make on our property! Can you say the same with your store brought products?
Two, what happens in order to get the "soap" factor (lye-saponification"?), and why glycerin(oils and fats) will leave your skin feeling hydrated.
So basically this happens when fats or oils (fatty acids, such as coconut oil, palm oil, etc.) come into contact with lye, a base. The triglyceride of fats react with the lye and are converted to soap and glycerol(saponification). It usually takes about 24 to 48 hours to complete once the lye and oils have been mixed. This step has already been done for me in my goat milk base. But most soap you buy at the store is body wash stripped of the glycerin (fats) and then added with detergents, which leave your skin feeling dry.

Candles
When it comes to making my candles, All of my candles are hand poured with natural essential oils and soy wax (derived from soy beans). My wicks are made of redwood. "There are greener advantages to choosing soy wax over a different type of candle wax. Soy burns slower than paraffin wax, so you get a candle that will last longer. Yes, all candles emit some sort of black soot, soy wax candles burns cleaner and will results in less soot". the candlestudio.com
